POLICE have confirmed the man found dead in a burnt our vehicle in the Nugent Buckland area was the man they allege fired shots at two police cars in New Norfolk last month.
Robert George Greig, 33, of Brighton was on the run for about two weeks when a tip off from the public led to a police ground and air chase. The vehicle went off-road into bushland in the Nugent-Buckland area, where it was seen to catch fire.
A police spokesperson said the circumstances surrounding Greig’s death continued to be investigated by Professional Standards and a report was being prepared for the Coroner. Last week, police said the death was not being treated as suspicious, however they would fully investigate the circumstances. This will include a post mortem and formal identification.
On September 26, police had been called to a family violence incident at Triffetts Road, Glenfern. A police car with two officers was on the way to the home when they were shot at on Boyer Road narrowly missing an officer. A second police car arriving soon after was also shot at.
Detective Inspector Troy Morrisby said police would like to speak to the driver of any vehicle that was on either Glenora Road or Montagu Street between Glenfern and New Norfolk around 11.50pm on that day.
