FOLLOWING a nail-biting win against the Brighton Robins, the young Eagles travelled to Huonville Oval on Saturday to tackle the strong Huonville Lions. It was another opportunity for the young Eagles to see how far they have progressed against the top-of-the-ladder Lions.
The young Eagles began well and took it right up to their more fancied opponents. The young Eagles were once again accurate in front of goal kicking two goals one behind for the term. The Lions were inaccurate kicking four behinds. Quarter time scores New Norfolk 2G 1B 13 points to Huonville 0G 4B 4 points.
The second quarter saw the Lions attacking relentlessly. The young Eagle defence was under extreme pressure but managed to keep their cool as a very inaccurate Lions piled on one goal seven behinds. The young Eagles maintained their composure and scored two goals two behinds against the flow to maintain their nine-point quarter time lead at the main break. Half time: New Norfolk 4G 2B 26 points to the Lions 1G 11B 17 points.
The Lions got on top of the Eagles in the third term and looked dangerous as they continued to pepper the goals. Fortunately for the young Eagles they remained inaccurate recording three goals three behinds. The young Eagles managed three behinds to head into the last quarter trailing the Lions by 9 points. Three quarter time scores New Norfolk 4G 5B 29 points to Huonville 4G 14B 38 points.
In the last quarter the young Eagles really stepped up holding their more fancied opponents to one goal one behind while the piling on three goals two behinds to record a narrow but impressive four-point victory.
We have previously talked about a lack of discipline with the young Eagles. On Saturday they concentrated on playing football and showed what they are capable of when they don’t get involved in undisciplined acts.
