SINCE starting in September 2019, New Norfolk Distilling has faced up to Covid, grown its business and now has been named the best rum in Australia.

The Drink Easy Awards, which are a celebration of Australian drinks and the culture surrounding brewing, distilling and fermenting were announced last week.

The New Norfolk business, run by Tarrant Derksen and eight employees, was recognised for its Misty Valley Silver Spirit.

It also took out sixth place for its Near Horizon Spiced Rum and its coffee liqueur came third.

“It’s quite an honour and it’s great recognition,’’ Mr Derksen said.
“In 2019 Silver Spirit came fourth and now we are number one.’’

He described the notes of the rum as floral, citrus and a taste of banana leaf.

Designed and created by the team, sales are growing in Tasmania and nationally.

Next year they hope to take part in a trade mission to Singapore and expand sales internationally.
